Gender Photography Project

During the Gender Unit students examine the history of women’s suffrage in the U.S., women’s literature that is too often left out of American English classes, and the sociology of the foundational concepts of masculinity and femininity. For this unit’s project, students design individual boards displaying five artistic photos taken of themselves. Students illustrate whether or not they fit the feminine and/or masculine gender roles they have been studying and how patriarchy supports or oppresses them personally. The composition of the board and photos illustrates a theme that conveys the student’s message to the viewer, and each photo portrays the student’s pose, clothing, hairstyle, and environment in precise detail.
